The Power of Presence in a Linear World

The Power of Presence in a Linear World

As the days grow shorter and the holiday season ramps up, life often feels like a whirlwind. Between to-do lists, gift-buying, logistics and commitments, it’s easy to get swept into a linear rhythm: one task leading to the next, a constant march toward productivity. Yet, amidst all of this is an open ended invitation to embrace something countercultural

the power of presence.

What Does It Mean to Be Present?

True presence is about being, not doing. It invites us into something deeper—a calming energy that begins within and radiates outward.

Being present with yourself is a slowing down, a quieting of the noise and connecting with your inner world: body, mind, heart, spirit.

Being present with others is bringing your whole self: grounded, unhurried and attuned.

In a world dominated by schedules and outcomes, the practice of presence taps into something entirely different: a timeless, non-linear experience. It’s a way of being that frees us from the guilt of “shoulds” and reconnects us with what our whole selves are truly longing for.

The Countercultural Gift of Presence

Our society often values productivity, consuming and “doing” over “being.”  This is especially true, it seems during the Advent, Holiday and Christmas season. Ironically, even the devotionals, calendars, and traditions meant to ground us follow a linear progression and include some “have to do’s.” And Christmas shopping! For some there is great care and joy in finding and giving gifts. For MANY, it is stressful, rushed and pressured (whether financially or finding the “perfect” gift).

Science Experiment: Notice your inner sensations as you look at this photo.

Yet, the presence of God-the Divine-Cosmos-Holy Source-Higher Force is anything but linear.  The sacred, by whatever name, is expansive, mysterious, holistic, and timeless….past, present, future, all encompassing.

Presence asks us to slow down, embrace cozy, darkness, warmth of a fire, candlelight. Step into the timeless flow of simply being.

Practices for Cultivating Presence

Integrating presence into your life doesn’t require grand gestures or huge changes. Start small, and focus on grounding yourself in the moment:

  • Mindful Breathing: Pause for a few moments to take deep, intentional breaths. Feel the rhythm of your breath as it moves through your body, anchoring you to the present moment.

  • Body Awareness: Tune into the sensations in your body. Notice where you’re holding tension and consciously release it. Wiggle your toes or rub your hands or knees (connect with your body in some small, reminder way)  when you notice yourself leaving your self, your presence.

  • Single-Tasking: Let go of multitasking and give your full attention to one activity at a time, whether it’s sipping a cup of tea or having a conversation with a loved one.

  • Let Go: Relax into the freedom of not doing. If a tradition or expectation has left you weary, what would happen if you let it go? That advent devotional feeling like a burden? Skip it, set it down. Step into the power of “no thank you” and create space for what truly nurtures you.

  • Ease up on your Inner Critic:  During this busy season, your inner critic may want to take control, but remember, it’s only a part of you—not the whole. Comfort that voice with kindness and gently remind it to take a back seat. Allow presence, compassion, and love to lead instead.

  • Saying Yes to Longing: Listen to what your body, mind, and spirit are truly craving. Say yes to that quiet walk, journaling time, or a meaningful connection with someone close to you.

Crisp air. Fresh Smells. What invigorating things do you experience outside?

An Invitation to Be Present

As the days grow darker, let the quiet, true intention of the season guide you inward. Step into the warmth and coziness. Let go of the linear expectations that have become second nature, and invite in the beauty of non-linear, grounded, and expansive presence.

Say yes to what nourishes the whole of you, and gently say “no thank you” to what pulls you away from this moment of connection (with yourself and your true presence with others). Approach this invitation with sacred playfulness, like an curious personal experiment in being, a fluid practice of presence.

There is no time like the present to experiment with presence. :) And know that, in doing so, you are aligning with the Divine rhythm of the universe— timeless, limitless, and full of grace.

We’re in this together.

Wishing you the very best…combined with showers of grace and love,

🌲🕯️ 💙
